Upcoming Acequia Workshops. The New Mexico Acequia Association provides informational workshops for acequia mayordomos, commissioners and parcientes. Call 505-995-9644 to reserve space. These workshops usually fill to capacity. Following are the next:

The New Mexico 2009 Legislative Session has come to a close with the following action on bills affecting water:

HB19 giving the State Engineer regulatory power over aquifers 2,500 feet deep passed the House and Senate and awaits signature by the Governor.

HB40 placing limitations on the extent of the power of municipalities to condemn water rights passed the House and Senate and awaits signature by the Governor.

SB336 which creates a tiered financial reporting system for local governments such as land grants, mutual domestics and acequias so that such entities would not need to do a full compliance audit every year also passed and has been sent to the Governor for signature.

The Office of the State Engineer has released their newest water conservation publication "Roof-Reliant Landscaping, Rainwater Harvesting with Cistern Systems in New Mexico". This is an on-line manual and other water conservation resources can be accessed FREE at the OSE website:
